CREAR STUDIO

Santa Ana Sites’ 20th Edition features Cuñao, a Los Angeles-based Latin folk band, as they present an outdoor evening of unforgettable storytelling with Canción del Inmigrante – a multidisciplinary opera told through puppetry, song, dance, and community created folk art.

The performance at Bower’s Museum will take place in its historic Mission Revival style courtyard – giving a dramatic architectural backdrop to the experience.  Canción del Inmigranteshares the tale of the immigrant’s migratory experience where audience members will witness the journeys of the immigrants to the U.S. – exposing their struggles, frustrations, and dreams.

The presentation is a partnership with Grand Central Art Center Artists’ in Residence, Sarah Rafael García and Dino Perez, co-founders of Crear Studio.  During an eight week residency with GCAC and Heritage Museum of Orange County, artist community members were invited to participate in free mask-making and storytelling workshops led by Los Angeles-based, puppet artist Beth Peterson and Cuñao, with support from Crear.  Participants explored the contours of immigrants’ stories alongside the artists, and the production will incorporate elements of the workshop into the experience.

In conjunction with the Canción performance, Crear Studio is presenting an installation with works created out of the theme of the residency by the Crear artists.  The show has it’s opening reception onSaturday, May 5th during DTSA Artwalk and continues through May 27th at the Santora Arts Building, Studio C, in DTSA 207. N. Broadway Studio visits can be arranged through crearstudiosa@gmail.com.

Support for the Canción del Inmigrante project has been provided by Community Engagement, whose mission is to stimulate positive social interaction in diverse communities through innovative and socially motivated art practice.
